For the FIR spring 2018 self-promotion campaign, we decided to do something we had never done before. A newspaper. Traditionally, FIR would hang up posters around the school encouraging students apply to the program. We were telling students what to do, instead of showing them what FIR actually does.
Often times, students think advertising is just three basic things. Either it’s a commercial, billboard, or a print ad. They don’t necessarily see advertising as a fun, creative outlet. It’s only for selling things. With this newspaper, we showed them that is far from the truth. Advertising can be anything. Sure it can be a commercial, but it can also be a satirical newspaper about the advertising industry.
With this newspaper, we wanted to show that advertising can be fun, and creative. All of these articles poke fun at various aspects of the industry. But what we also wanted to do, was show prospective students what the disciplines in advertising actually were. The issue we ran into time and again, was that very few people actually knew what the roles were inside an ad agency. They had no idea what a strategist, or account manager was. We thought this would be a fun way to explain that, without it feeling like we were explaining. The same goes for advertising. We wanted to this be an ad for our program, without it feeling like an ad. The way a poster usually would.
We ended printing around 100 copies of our paper, and leaving them at tables around campus. The paper was a success, and was one of the most fun things I got to participate in.
